What is VIP?
VIP, also known as Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide, is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid neuropeptide found throughout the nervous system, digestive tract and other tissues.
VIP plays an important role in several physiological processes, including immune signalling, gastrointestinal function, smooth-muscle relaxation, blood vessel regulation and nervous system communication.
It has attracted scientific interest for its potential involvement in inflammatory regulation, intestinal barrier function, neurological protection and respiratory physiology.
Research has investigated VIP's interaction with specific receptors, primarily VPAC1 and VPAC2, which are involved in cellular signalling pathways associated with immune responses, secretion, circulation and tissue function.
Although VIP has been studied in experimental and clinical settings, its effectiveness for many proposed therapeutic applications remains unproven.
How It Works
-
Inflammation Regulation: Investigated for its potential to influence inflammatory signalling and cytokine activity
-
Immune System Modulation: Studied for its interaction with immune cells and pathways involved in immune regulation
-
Gut Health & Intestinal Function: Research explores VIP's role in intestinal secretion, smooth-muscle activity and gastrointestinal barrier physiology
-
Neuroprotective Pathways: Investigated for potential effects on neuronal survival, cellular stress responses and nervous system signalling
-
Respiratory Function: Studied for its ability to influence airway smooth-muscle relaxation and pulmonary vascular responses
-
Cellular Signalling: Activates VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, primarily involving cyclic AMP (cAMP) signalling pathways
